I haven't seen this angle discussed much here, so it's at least worth a diary. Melanie Sloan - Executive Director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington - CREW made the cable news rounds today. She
claims she received some of these Foley emails through a 3rd party who got them from a congressional staffer. She sent them to the FBI on 7/21/2006. What did the FBI do in response? Apparently nothing....
Sloan said they were sent via e-mail to the FBI.
"The agent called me to follow up to say, 'So, these are e-mails from Mark Foley?' And I said, 'Yes.' And that was the end of our interaction," she said.
The FBI claims:
that Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington did not provide enough information -- including the pages' identities and e-mail addresses -- to pursue the case. The FBI reviewed copies of the messages, government officials said, but did not have enough information to move forward with an investigation or seek subpoenas.
Sloan disputes the FBI's account, claiming that full email addresses were provided.
This smells very funny to me. Now the FBI is finally getting around to an investigation, but there needs to be a alot more light shined on this story. Why didn't the FBI pursue this back in July?
