Candidate Nancy Skinner and campaign manager Sheila Smith met with Candidate Nancy Skinner and campaign manager Sheila Smith.
Two sixth graders from a local middle school got a chance to meet with their local Democratic Congressional candidate and her campaign manager. The students will be role-playing as Nancy and Sheila in their classes mock election this November.
First the girls met with Sheila to talk strategy. They met the staff and learned the various roles of campaign workers, from our field director, finance staff, to myself- the online outreach organizer. They got to hangout in the campaign War Room, where they learned about forming a GOTV program and a "win number". To help with their own GOTV efforts in the classroom, the girls got t-shirts, stickers, and bumper stickers. They decided on a win number of 28...50% of their class + 1.
Then they got to meet Nancy to talk policy. They asked about her plan for the economy, and "the Candidates Skinner" looked over the "The Next Great American Journey"- Nancy's plan to repeal $6 Billion in oil subsidies and use it to develop fuel-efficient vehicles. Both campaign managers approved the plan of course. Nancy told the girls that since Detroit put the world on wheels, Detroit should lead the charge in clean vehicles as well.
We'll keep you posted on the results of the mock election!
