Here's another take: for those who may have felt I was too harsh with the Democratic Party yesterday. I did not mean to characterize them as being akin to a cold-blooded murderer. Given that that was my first blog, I will allow myself a little slack if my tone was on the creepy side.
Alright,then, Take Two:
The character of Fortunato now represents the country of Iraq, in the aftermath of the American occupation. Let Montresor stand for the Bush Administration, or the GOP, itself, in it's capacity as rubber stampers and enablers, or, in the view of most of the rest of the world, simply the US, all of us.
I will stand by my assigning of the part of Household Servants" to the MSM, who really are as predictable as Montresor says they are. Maybe we shouldn't really expect them to police their masters, after all. Isn't there a conflict of interests there? Picture a dog biting the hand that feeds it. That would be the coat of arms for a proper media.
The final act of the story, wherein Montresor shackles his victim to the wall, and proceeds to brick him up inside the crypt, will be instantly recognizable to anyone half paying attention to the events unfolding in Iraq. As each row af bricks is completed, and the level of hysteria rises on the other side, it becomes more and more clear that we will soon be done with our task, and "hasten from the catacombs". It's shocking how easy it is to execute a whole country!
"No one injures me with impunity", states Montresor's coat of arms. Picture the "serpent rampant" embedding it's fangs in the foot that steps on it. Outside, the carnival reaches new heights of madness... it's election season! We venture through a tent door, and inside there are contortionists, sword swallowers, hermaphrodites, the whole gamut!
