It was bad enough when two consecutive Republican governors decided that their job and responsibilities to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was not important enough to them, and left the corner office for attempts at bigger and brighter things.
Now, however, things are worse, as Governor MItt Romney has decided to abandon his responsibilities to the Commonwealth and attempt for bigger and brighter things, but still keep his title and paycheck while doing so. He has abandoned his duties as governor, leaving most of them to Lt. Governor Healey, and has traveled around the country bashing Massachusetts in an attempt to show that he isn't really one of us, and that he would be a good presidential candidate. Well, he's right about the former, at least.
This morning's Boston Globe contains an article by Maria Cramer (http://www.boston.com/...) describing Governor Romney's most recent Massachusetts-bashing, which he decided to combine with good ol' fashioned gaybashing at Boston's Tremont Temple Baptist Church.
At an event where speakers described how the "homosexual agenda" was someone interfering with the religious freedom and dissent constitutional rights of the religious bigots-er, religious right, that is, Governor Romney said, "Today, there are some people who would like to establish a single religion, the religion of secularism."
Beyond the utter stupidity in the contradiction in terms of religion of secularism, apparently my Governor simply cannot understand the concept of separation of church and state. Judging from some of his other remakrs, perhaps we should excuse Romney for just not being that bright. At the same event, he described Massachusetts as the birthplace for traditional marriage, which I'm sure is news for all those folks who were married before the Plymouth Bay Colony was established in the early 1600s. On the other hand, perhaps we should welcome Romney's claim. Afterall, if Massachusetts could have redefined traditional marriage some time between its founding and now, why can't it do so again to incorporate same-sex marriage?
Romney also made the bombastic statement, "Every child deserves a mother and a father." Really, Mr. Romney? Is that really your claim? Then tomorrow morning at a press conference, I'd like to see you announce your proposed legislation to require that all widows and widowers with children remarry within six months. Sounds utterly absurd, right? But gee, I thought that every child deserves a mother and a father... So all single parents, be it a result of divorce or never marrying or death of a partner, etc., are all unfit, right Mr. Romney?
As long as Governor Romney is Governor of Massachusetts, he has a responsibility to the people of the Commonwealth. His duties are to be our governor, not to be a presidential candidiate. He can do both, but where the two collide, he should pick the interests of the Commonwealth over his personal interest. Of course, that may be asking for too much. One can hardly expect greatness from a petty, intolerant, selfish bigot.
