The Raleigh News-Observer reported today that a Wal-Mart in Garner, NC will be rolling back wages for 70 employees hired since last June. A quarterly pay audit found that these employees were making more than they should have. The employees will face a $1.00 or more pay cut to their hourly salary. Thankfully employers are not allowed to impose retroactive wage cuts.
The average hourly Wal-Mart wage in North Carolina is $9.85, which Walmart says is 17 cents higher than the average pay for hourly Wal-Mart employees nationwide, according to www.walmartfacts.com. Can you imagine living on this wage?
The article also said that "a few" employees were being underpaid and would get a raise. (How many?) Wonder if that will be retroactive for the duration they were being underpaid? I doubt it.
Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, reported sales of $203 billion for the first nine months of 2004, an increase of nearly 12 percent over the previous year.
