In this weeks City paper there was a great article on O'Malley and the progress Baltimore City has made under his leadership. Its not your typical article based on numbers and policy, but rather a first hand account from a city resident who recalls the Baltimore Mayor Schmoke envisioned and the Baltimore Martin O'Malley has built over the course of his 7 years in office.
Living for the City:
Now Gov. Robert Ehrlich is trying to hang Baltimore around O'Malley's neck like an albatross. The way Ehrlich plays it, Baltimore is the repository of all the state's ills, filled with lousy schools, crooked cops, and high taxes. Ehrlich thinks that he can carve out a hole in the center of the state at the end of the Patapsco River and claim that everything else that has gone well is because of him.
Me, I'm sick of people like Ehrlich bashing the crap out of Baltimore. He became governor, and since then has claimed credit for a whole host of things that he fought against. O'Malley turned a city around. That counts for a lot more in my book.
More after the jump...
For those of you who missed the WJZ/MPT debate last Monday night, Governor Ehrlich voiced his true opinion about the City of Baltimore with this one quote.
"With us, you [Baltimore City] are done" - Gover Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr.
The Republican National Governors Association has released a pretty appalling TV-ad this week, which among other things features footage from a crime scene, a dead body, and a cemetery.
Watch the ad here:
Pretty low, huh?
Last on the gubernatorial list. A disturbing new poll published by Ariel & Ethan, LLC:
O'Malley 64%
Ehrlich 16%
Undecided 21%
Results look great, right? Wrong, this poll was composed of 402 African American Democratic likely voters in Maryland (October 11 through 13, 2006).
There is some good news about this poll, though. What I'm hearing is some local African American candidates, ex-candidates, and community leaders (Wayne Curry is one) who have axes to grind with O'Malley sponsored the poll. Some think it's a ploy to pressure O'Malley into promising cabinet positions to these people in return for their help over the final 2 weeks of the campaign.
On the Senate side:
Cardin received the endorsement of the Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, and the Hagerstown Herald-Mail.
Also, Steele's been catching a lot of flack for his latest comments on a woman's right to choose.
When asked by the same reporter if Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided, Lt. Gov. Steele said: "What has that got to do with anything? I'm a Senate candidate. My opinion on that is moot." [MSNBC, 10/17/06]
Ill end on a positive note, the Big Dawg was in town this week campaigning for O'Malley and Cardin. Apparently over a 1,000 supporters showed up for the rally. Here is a picture for those who missed it.
