No one seems to have diaried this here yet, which is a bit surprising. I'll delete the diary if it turns out I'm not the first.
Yesterday's Chicago Sun-Times had a column by Religion writer Cathleen Falsani that goes where this column has apparently never gone before: To the door of the White House. It's a good read.
Newspaper Religion writers are generally bound not to take sides, lest they lose credibility as dispassionate commentators. However, Falsani isn't so much taking sides as recognizing that a choice has been thrust upon her -- and upon all of us:
I'm reluctant to appear unduly partisan, at least not in print.
I don't want to paint one political ideology or another with a broad brush, and I am reticent always to judge the quality of anyone's faith (or heart), that of a president or anyone else.
But there comes a time when silence is immoral. Now, I believe, is that time.
She addresses much of what so-called "morals voters" should have been pondering a year ago: The illegal and immoral war and the non-response to Katrina. But she saves her most direct shot to describe the current
Republican effort to cut $50 billion dollars from those who need it most:
Maybe immoral isn't the appropriate word.
Downright evil is a better description.
These words from a
religion writer in the MSM! Finally, the fresh air is starting to flow.
