Over 5,000 women have signed a petition for the cover article of Ms. magazine stating that they had abortions and are not ashamed of it. Talk about throwing gas on the fire...... This comes at a time when South Dakota is on the verge of banning all abortions, which will inevitably be deemed unconstitutional by someone who will sue the state of South Dakota and will then appeal the case to the Supreme Court. What they decide will have a profound effect on American women. Here's the deal: South Dakota has already banned abortion except in cases of incest and rape. South Dakotan voters have a ballot initiative on Nov. 7 that would ban abortions entirely. If that happens, the issue will almost certainly find its way to the Supreme Court which, as we all know, decided in the early 1970s that the right to abortion is protected by the consitutional right to privacy. What wil happen? Nobody knows. For what it's worth, here is my opinion on the abortion issue. Read it, agree, disagree, find somewhere in the middle...... hopefully you'll have some new things to think about.
I am personally opposed to abortion. It certainly isn't an option I would consider..... However, I fully support abortion rights; like most of the nation, I am pro-choice. I simply am not convinced that the government has any place inside a woman's womb. Also, I don't think people fully understand the repercussions of a comprehensive ban on abortion. Extremely unsafe back-alley abortions, coat-hanger abortions, etc. will become commonplace. Our number of unwanted children, young woman death rate, and poverty rate will skyrocket. And then, what happens if a woman is caught? Do you jail her? We already have the highest proportional prison population in the world. Do you fine her? For doing something to her own body? Will there be annual inspections of women's women parts to ensure that no abortions took place? Surely that's unconstitutional.
And on what grounds would you decide to ban abortion in the first place? Because you think fetuses are protected by the constitutional right to life? Because you think the Bible says 'bortion = bad? What about the separation of church and state? What about the rule that we shall have no laws which pander to a religion?
Allow me to reiterate. I don't like abortion. I think it is a terrible procedure. But that's only my personal opinion; who am I to force it upon the rest of the nation? If you really wanted to cut down on the number of abortions in this country, you would be better off campaigning for more widespread and easily available contraceptives. But then, you wouldn't be able to punish the 'bortionists, would you? It occurs to me that some of these people, the Falwell and Robertson types, want to punish the women who have abortions more than they want to actually reduce the number of abortions.
Put that in your pipes and smoke it, Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.
So, there you have it. My viewpoint is basically power to the people. But it was pretty one-sided, yes? Leave some comments and let's start a debate!
