You may have heard that moderate Republicans are a dying breed. If so, then you heard wrong. Because they're not dying -- they're going to prison.
The latest in the Mark Foley kid sex scandal involves a couple of other Republican congressman. This time, not that they were covering up for Foley's behavior, but that Foley was presenting them with an award for "distinguished public service". You got that right -- Mark Foley as the standard-bearer of decent governance. Whatever.
And even though they've scrubbed this page of any mention of Mark Foley, clearly ashamed at the predator in their midst and the dishonor he brings, there Foley is, clear as day, awarding Rep. Bill Thomas an award for public service. Thank you, Google Cache!
Google's cache knows and sees all.
... but maybe they're waiting for Mark Foley's comeback anyway -- they left the file on their server:

[Also pictured is now retired Rep. Amo Houghton (R-NY).]
A question for the press or anyone who would like to ask: "Representative Thomas, how does it feel to be given an award by a child sex predator?"
Or: "Sen. Chafee, how do you feel about former Rep. Foley giving an award in your father's name?"
Or ask Tom Davis (president, R-VA) or Mike Castle (chairman, R-DE) or Charlie Bass (R-NH) or Susan Collins (R-ME) or Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY): "Mark Foley was until recently a member of your organization. Is that your idea of main street America?"
Because Republican Main Street Partnership supposes that moderate Republicans can save the day on a host of issues to give them cover for their extreme neo-conservative agenda. Maybe these senators and representatives should answer our questions about who they consider their friends.
But nothing can save the Republicans now. Not their self-righteousness, not their hatred, and not even their never-ending incompetence. Republicans in Congress couldn't even bother to turn in a child sex predator when they knew about it.
Because everyone ought to be asking by now: Is this what your 'main street' looks like?
Not mine.
Let's help make Bill Thomas retirement this year memorable -- by electing a Democrat to his open seat in Congress.
