I hate the Iraq War. I can connect the dots and easily see the fiasco that it has become and the blunder that it always has been. I also dislike the presidency of George W. Bush, for reaons that are obvious to everyone here at Daily Kos. Some people, however, unconditionally support the Iraq War and President Bush, as is pointed out by the great journalist Bill Moyers here
http://www.energybulletin.net/.... Why? Not because of their political convictions, but because of their religious beliefs.....
Roughly 15% of the U.S. population subscribes to a belief in a mysterious, apocalyptic branch of Christianity, which I like to call the End Times Philosophy. Now, if you've never been exposed to this philosophy, it will seem a little weird. Or rather...... Really, really, strange. The end-timers believe that certain events that are occurring now were predicted in the Bible thousands of years ago. When all of these pre-determined events take place, Jesus Christ himself will appear in the sky and suck the true believers into Heaven (straight out of their clothes, mind you) where they will watch the rest of the world suffer from the "Tribulation," which is a terrible period of locusts, earthquakes, famine, disease, plagues, fireballs, world wars, the rule of the Anti-Christ, etc. Eventually, after all the heathens (a classification which usually includes homosexuals, political liberals, and non-fundamentalist Christians) are destroyed, the chosen few will get to come back to the Earth, which has now become a New Heaven, and live happily after..... You will know that the end-timers were on to something if one day you happen to see a bunch of naked fundamentalists soaring through the clouds. Among them would be Hal Lindsey and John Hagee. Ewwww........
The fundamentalist Christians who subscribe to this belief are not crazy. They are usually very kind, polite, and intelligent people. You probably know some of them. Our current president, George W. Bush, claims to be one (though I am not sure if this is really the case or just a way for him to gain votes)..... Now, what does all this have to do with the Iraq War? Well, the end-timers believe that the Iraq War is one of the prophesied events which must occur before Christ can return to "rapture" them into Heaven. So for them, the Iraq War is not something to hate; it is merely a necessary evil that must occur before they can be raptured. Thus, they welcome the Iraq War with arms wide open. So now you get it. No matter how terrible things get in Iraq, at least 15% of the population will continue to support the war. And at least 15% of the population will unwaveringly support President Bush, their gift from God, no matter what he does.....
