This from CNN:
Rangel, a Democrat, was quoted in The New York Times on Thursday saying: "Mississippi gets more than their fair share back in federal money, but who the hell wants to live in Mississippi?"
Rep. Rangel, of course, was discussing his plans to redirect federal money back to his state. But seriously, how much of an asshole do you have to be to make a comment like that? Rep. Chip Pickering, a Republican from Mississippi fired back, saying that Rangel owes the state an apology and that he hopes that this is not what he should expect from Democratic leadership. To that, Rangel lamely responded with something to the effect of "Well golly, I just love New York so much, why would anyone want to live anywhere else?!"
Rangel's comments and Pickering's reply appeared in newspapers all over the state, from the Jackson Clarion-Ledger to the Sun-Herald, serving Biloxi and Gulfport.
I'm glad that Rangel is all puffed up about his chairmanship, and I'm sure this story will fade fast and not do any real damage. But Rangel's comments are indicative of the anti-South undercurrent that has swept up many people. Deplorable. How are Democrats supposed to compete in the South with our leadership having this sort of mentality?
