Two days ago in a small restaurant in Maine, my husband and I overheard a conversation between two women. We weren't eavesdropping exactly. November is the 'off-season' so there aren't many tourists around and when one goes out to eat, it isn't uncommon to have the restaurant to one's self. Well, we were one of two parties at a small coastal restaurant and the other party's conversation was in unusually loud voices. It would have been difficult NOT to have heard what they were saying.
The party consisted of two women, one an elderly lady with white hair pulled back neatly into a bun. She was fashionably thin and dressed in what appeared to be an expensive suit. The other woman was young enough to be her daughter (though she wasn't); was overweight and very concilliatory toward the elderly woman. She appeared to be a 'wannabe.' Wannabe what? Wealthy? Attractive? Socially connnected? Who knows!!
Inevitably it seems in the wake of November 7, the conversation turned to the elections and politics. The elderly woman related the event of a Democrat politician knocking at her door prior to the election. She described him as someone who 'hopes to make women swoon.' We know this politician and would describe him as a tall, slender, elderly gentleman with a healthy shock of gray hair who is friendly, but not flirtatious or a ladies' man. Her description said volumes more about her than it did about him!
She then went on to laughingly describe how this politician stroked his moustache 'as though he had a mouse hidden in it,' the lady said. She ended with, "I told him I'd rather vote for the devil than vote for him!"
My reaction!!?? Well, I wondered what could be so awful about this politician that this apparently intelligent woman (Can one be wealthy AND stupid? You answer that one for yourself.) would say that she'd rather vote for the devil than for this man, a Democrat! I expect that it was the fact that he was a democrat that she objected to as I didn't hear her speak of ONE of his stances as a candidate. All of her attacks were ad hominem ones...personal---not political! She would rather vote for EVIL than to vote for a Democrat. Hmmmmmm....now there's intelligence for you!
Is she afraid that the Dems are going to strip away her privilege? Is she afraid that the Dems will give some of her wealth to the poor? Does she believe....you fill in the details!
She spoke of the 'culture of welfare.' I wonder what that is in her mind? I wish I could have asked!
I sit at my table with a meal before me and gasp at her ignorance! This is what the Dems are up against and the election of Nov. 7, is not going to change it!
