i went to a friend's engagement party last night... for a great girl i've known since highschool. she went to texas (trinity to be precise) for school because she identified with the conservative-slanted demographics. she's a smart girl, a strong christian, and a staunch social conservative.
her dad is a radiologist, and a rich one at that. these people live in one of the wealthiest areas in california and their house has been featured by a couple of outfits that take people on tours through rich people homes. but they are not dumb, and that's why i thought it would be interesting to ask my friend's father what he thinks about the current situation in america.
"i'm all for it." he said. he went on to say that when a party takes power for too long, they take it for granted eventually, and that's what we saw with the election. "it's all the same when they gain power," was his damning opinion of politicians altogether. no matter who gets into office, whether it be a repug or dem, it doesn't matter because the office itself is what corrupts people.
i thought a lot about this, because i'm only 23 and people usually cite my youth when i begin to talk about how i think that in general, dems have less gullible constituents and therefore are held closer to their ideals than repugs. how the fuck could i know, though, because i didn't watch mondale debate bush back in the day.
tonight, i felt like writing my first diary ever on this subject. and i want to say one thing: let's not fuck this one up.
before you say, "we're dems, we don't fuck up." or any other idiotic knee-jerk response, stop and think about the realities we're facing. up til now, this website has represented the underdog. it's been easy because we were never the ones making the decision, we had nothing to lose. but now, things are different.
i want everyone to acknowledge here and now that we don't support the dems because they are the party our parents supported. we do not support dems because we hate repugs. they are not "the lesser evil." they are visionaries who share our love of this country and wish to make it better, just like us. and if they fuck up, we are going to come down on them even harder than we would a republican.
i want us to acknowledge that our faith is not blind, like that of the people in the other party. we will hold our leaders accountable if they do not achieve what they said they would.
for the next two years, we will be walking a tightrope. if we hold our leaders to an even higher level of standards than those failing to lead in the repug party (like the media always has) then those who made the right choice during this last election will continue to do so.
and maybe even more people will see the light.
