My sister just doesn't know what to do, and neither do I. My nephew will be 16 in January, and he wants to drop out of High School.
My nephew is a really good kid, but he's always had problems in school. He's dyslexic and ADD, and up until Junior High, was always in Resource (I know these terms mostly from conversations with my sister, so if they are incorrect, please feel free to correct them).
In Junior High, the counselors of the school convinced my sister to remove him from Resource ("You DO NOT want him going into High School with that on his record.") So she did, and he was okay in Jr High. But High School has been rough, and it turns out that because he wasn't put on some kind of "watch list," he is no longer eligible for Resource.
So where does that leave my nephew? Well, he's left to his own resources. So, my sister hired a tutor (first session is tonight), but what if that doesn't work? And thank god she can afford it.
And what is most sad about this is that it's not just my nephew. According to an ABC News report that I saw tonight nearly 1 in 3 High School students won't graduate.
Can you believe it?
I'm just dumbfounded.
