November 7th is the Louisiana primary for the house seat of William Jefferson, he of the freezer full of 90k bucks. LA. is weird, election day acts as the primary and you only win if you get over 50 percent or some such thing. If you do not, then you have to face a run off vote of the top two candidates.
We can't be the party of reform if we do not get rid of someone as corrupt as William Jefferson. In LA they have a good candidate to replace him but she needs help. Her name is Karen Carter, she is a pro-choice African American woman who is a really good fit for the district. If she wins she will be the FIRST African American woman to represent LA. in the US Congress.
Below is the email I received.
Dear Teresa,
Remember when the FBI raided Louisiana Rep. William Jefferson's home and found $90,000 in "cold cash" in his freezer?
Well, we have a chance to send Jefferson packing: Democratic state Rep. Karen Carter will help pro-choice Democratic women clean the House, but she needs our help TODAY to prevail in a crowded field of 12 Jefferson challengers.
Make an urgent online contribution to Karen Carter today!
Voters in this hurricane-battered New Orleans district, one of the poorest in the country, deserve better representation than Jefferson, who is still under federal investigation for lining his pockets with bribes and illegal kickbacks.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi stripped Jefferson of his position on the powerful Ways and Means Committee. But Jefferson, now the second least powerful member in the House, is spending heavily to hang onto his seat.
In contrast, Karen Carter's a rising star known for high ethical standards and she'll work to change the culture of corruption in Washington, D.C.
As chair of the Louisiana House Insurance Committee, Carter has led the charge for displaced New Orleanians seeking restitution after Hurricane Katrina. If elected, she'll be a powerful advocate for the needs of her constituents.
But she can't secure her status as the top challenger, unseat Jefferson, and become the first African American woman to represent Louisiana in the U.S. House without your immediate support.
Carter urgently needs $250,000 to stay on the airwaves, reach voters on the ground, and rid the House of this scandal-plagued incumbent!
Will you help her reach key voters over the final, critical 48 hours?
Support Karen Carter TODAY and help seize this late-breaking opportunity to help a pro-choice Democratic woman change the direction of our country.
Warmest regards,
Ellen R. Malcolm
President
