Rather than gloat about today's victory, start focusing on the next round. In the 2008 Senate elections, the Republicans will be defending 21 seats against our 12.
OK, gloat for a minute and then get back to work after the jump.
Today, we won against the odds. Next time, the odds reverse. Among the 21 seats they will have to defend are likely retirees: Ted (Tubes) Stevens (R-AL) who will be 85 and John Warner (R-VA) will be 81.
There were only seven Senators with a net disapproval rating as of Sept. 2006. Today saw the purge of DeWine, Santorum and Burns, but the remaining unpopulars include Oklahoma Republican James Inhofe and Wayne Allard (R-CO). If Chuck Hagel runs for President, another Republican incumbent seat opens up. OK, Nebraska isn't blue but stranger things just happened.
Three other Republicans are sitting on what should be blue seats: Norm Coleman of Minnesota, Gordon Smith of Oregon and John Sununu of New Hampshire. Running the repugnant Saxby Chambliss out of Georgia is probably a long shot but a man can dream.
See Wikipedia for the full list of the class of 2008 and think on which Dems should be recruited to pick some of this low hanging fruit:
