I don't mean to be a downer on such an AWSOME day but since I live in Georgia and see what is happening to the Democratic party here every day I can't help but point out that Georgia... even more than the rest of the south is completely out of step with the rest of the country.
We all can see the evidence that the Republicans really can't call themselves a national party anymore... they are it would seem to me a party of the South... they lose big... I mean BIG in the northeast down through PA and OH and they suffer losses in the mountain states as well.
I posted a diary after the Georgia democratic primary in July saying that the Democratic Party in Georgia was dead to ME. Well, today I think we can officially write the obituary for the Georgia Democratic party. We need some of the 50 state strategy help down here... DESPERATELY.
Democratic Statewide Vote Percentages (according to the Secretary of State web site)
Governor - Taylor 38.3%
Lt. Governor - Martin 42.4%
Secretary of State - Buckner 41.9%
Attorney General - Baker 57.3%
State School Superintendent - Majette 35.1%
Commissioner of Insurance - Drexinger 34.5%
Commissioner of Agriculture - Irvin 56.1%
Commissioner of Labor - 54.9%
Last report I saw Republicans widened their majority in the state house by 5 seats.
In addition while it looks possible they may hold (I hope) GA8 and GA12 almost flipped red yesterday.
There are what would seem to be a few bright spots there... Attorney General, Commissioners of Ag and Labor but once these incumbents decide to leave those offices will almost certainly fall to the Republicans.
I am a transplant from the northeast (thank God for the sanity of former neighbors) and after years of living here I just can't figure the south out. The people down here (at least in GA) seem to be numb to absolute mess the Republicans have made of our country. I don't get it... and I am resigned to the fact that I never will.
One party rule for the foreseeable future in Georgia...
