So, it was just
splashed across the newswires that the U.S. was going to
close Abu Ghraib prison.
But don't be fooled! We're not shutting down a prison that's been notorious for torture and synonomous with the collective black eye our country deserves for our illegal invasion of a sovereign nation.
We're just opening a new prison.
The one-sentence article just posted on Yahoo! News says...
The U.S. military said Thursday that a new facility for its Abu Ghraib prisoners will be completed in three months, after which Abu Ghraib will be returned to Iraqi authorities.
So, an hour ago we thought we were closing this prison which was synonomous with torture. And now we learn all that's happening is that we're turning it over to the Iraqi government once we've transferred our Abu Ghraib prisoners to the new facility.
Why the new facility? Do we need to have a better space for holding our prisoners? Was Abu Ghraib not good enough? Do we need to have a more secure torture facility?
Or was it simply that Bush couldn't pronounce the name correctly?
