It looks like Lancaster County, Nebraska just became the newest front in the Republican's war on good government.
Nebraska's District 01, including the capital city Lincoln, looks to be the testing area for a statewide program called "Satellite Voting".
"Satellite Voting" is basically when the state sets up extra areas where people can vote in advance of election day. The purpose is to increase voter turnout by making voting more convenient.
In Nebraska's 1st district, implementation of the satellite voting process was handled without citizen input by the Election Comissioner and the Secretary of State, both Republicans, the E.C. is appointed by the Governor, who is also Republican.
According to this Call for Action by the Nebraska Democratic Party:http://www.nebraskademocrats.org/... , the Republican Sec of State and the Election Comissioner have sited all the new satellite voting areas in places where Republicans outnumber Democrats 2 to 1.
This is a neat trick in a town like Lincoln, which has a history of voting Democratic, and usually has Democratic Mayors and State Senators. (the Nebraska Legislature, a Unicameral, is supposedly non-partisan)
The Election Commissioner has eschewed any notions of fairness and transparency in his site selection process and is trying to present the Secretary of State with new voting sites that will increase the turnout of Republican voters only.
IF you are a voter who lives in Nebraska, or even just someone who is concerned with fair voting practices, I urge you to read the attached post from the Nebr. Democratic Party, and E-mail Secretary of State John Gale john.gale@sos.ne.gov
We need to make sure that dirty tricks like this one get shut down fast, before Republicans get the idea to try this in more places.
