The big lie continues to have a
huge price tag. Now Bush wants a mere $70 billion that could go to saving our planet to saving face in Iraq.
The White House has told Congress to expect requests for about $70 billion in additional funding for the ongoing budget year for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and $18 billion more for hurricane relief, a Senate GOP aide says.
The details of the requests are not finalized but President Bush's budget for 2007, to be submitted next week, will reflect the totals for planning purposes, said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Another $2.3 billion to combat avian flu is also expected.
To get a sense of how much money $70 billion is, if you started counting now, you wouldn't be done until 2000 more troops have died, Exxon had another ten years of record profits and the polar ice caps had completely melted.
This kind of story used to drive me nuts until I took a little action by creating the Peace Dove car magnet. Now at least I feel I am contributing in some small way to the peace process. I hope you take some small action today, even if it's just letting another human being know that we are not standing by silently while the cost of this madness continues to add up.
Come to think of it, $6 plus $1 shipping feels like a small price to pay for a statement of peace, considering where $70 billion of our tax dollars is going.
Proceeds also benefit these great charities.
