For a long time, many have thought that Dick Cheney was the "real" President of the US. With
Executive Order 13292, Cheney even has powers equal to the office of President to classify and reclassify information. Few if any people in America think the VP (much less this one) should be empowered with such authority. Bush has essentially abdicated his throne to this apparent supervillain whom many always thought was really running the show...
Is it possible for public opinion to pressure the President to revoke (or Congress to vote to revoke) this executive order? If not, it seems clear why on FoxNews last week, Cheney brought up this classification power: to use as his (and Libby's) defense in the Valerie Plame leak investigation. If the order were repealed, could he still even try to use this defense? If so, seeing as the leak was purely politically motivated and flat-out treasonous, perhaps it's time to shame the President to fire his so-called second-in-command.
Even most Republicans must think Cheney is a political liability at this point (though they're surely scared he'd destroy them if they said so!) It seems like a winning theme for Bush to get rid of Dick at this point; he must be one of the least popular political figures in US history! Nobody likes a traitor. This guy's a greedy, secretive, corrupt chickenhawk at very least and is perhaps even more nefarious than that. I certainly have no desire to help Bush in the polls, but I do have a desire to get this evil puppet-master out of our government. I can't imagine that if not terrified to admit it, most Americans and their representatives must feel the same way. If he were gone, maybe our decent into utter oblivion can still be prevented?
