You know how when someone in the office is expecting a baby, there is very often an office pool about what day/time the baby will be born? Well, I think our office pool should be, "when will the repug party implode?"
Here are some of the factors to consider: you've got the immorality of the repugs' budget, and domestic spying, and near civil war in Iraq, and the Valerie Plame issue, and Abramoff, the bungled Katrina efforts, and now the port security debacle (port security is really much larger than the issue of UAE company ownership that has most recently made the news), to name a few.
If repug voters are demoralized enough by all this, I wonder what will get them to the polls for the mid-term election? I don't know if the sick wedge issue du jour, the proposed bans on gay adoption, will be enough. Dubya may not have to worry about getting re-elected, but the remainder of his presidency, not to mention his legacy, will be in jeopardy. I think that if things go Dem in 2006, Dubya's chances of facing impeachment grow, exponentially.
A recent, underpublicized Zogby poll --
"...found that by a margin of 52 percent to 43 percent, Americans want Congress to consider impeaching President Bush "if he wiretapped American citizens without a judge's approval."
As the article goes on to say,
Well, there's no "if" about it anymore. The president approved warrantless wiretaps in 2002. Two years later, during a campaign appearance in Buffalo, N.Y. he volunteered he'd done nothing of the kind. That's called breaking the law and lying about it.
(Emphasis added.)
This Village Voice article quotes him as saying, "Any time you hear the United States government talking about wiretap, a wiretap requires a court order." Then added, "Nothing has changed, by the way. When we're talking about chasing down terrorists, we're talking about getting a court order before we do so."
If the Dems take over the House, John Conyers, the current minority ranking member, will become Chair of the House Judiciary Committee. You gotta know things will get bad for Dubya if that happens. I love John Conyers -- a man of rare ethical quality!!
So, ladies and gentlemen, place your bets and let the pool begin!
Stay strong!
