If recent letters to the editor are any indication, my campaign to unseat
Republican, Darrell Issa (U.S. Congress - CA Dist. 49) is on
my
opponent’s
radar. The name-calling has begun, and the label they’ve chosen for me
is “wacky”.
When they called Mahatma Gandhi “wacky” he responded: First they
ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."
With eight months to go before the November election, I’ve already progressed
to stage two of Gandhi’s steps to success!
When the majority of the people agree on a position, it’s probably time to take it out of the “wacky” pile. If 55% of the American people think that the war in Iraq is a mistake (Gallop poll, Feb. 2006), maybe those saying we need to stay there are starting to sound a little wacky.
Last November, a Zogby poll showed that 51% of Americans supported impeachment
if it were proven that the president lied about prewar intelligence. Now we
know that not only did Bush lie about pre-war intelligence, he also lied about
his pre-Katrina intelligence. That takes impeachment off my wacky list, and puts
it right at the top of my “Do It Now” list.
I had the opportunity to talk with David Swanson of After
Downing Street.org this weekend. We discussed the urgency of changing the
balance of power in Congress this November. David pointed out that even if
progressive legislators regain
control of Congress, they will be impotent as long as Bush remains at the helm.
The reason: signing statements – something the President can add to a law
at the time he signs it to “clarify” his interpretation of the law.
If we go back to George Washington, American presidents have attached signing
statements to laws a total of 322 times up until this president. George W. Bush
has done it 435 times! As David explained, “In doing so, he's rewritten
the laws he's signed. As a result, torture is self defense, war is peace, and
dictatorship is democracy.”
George W. Bush is a dictator in president’s clothing. He and his cabal
have raped our constitution, depleted our treasury, sent our kids to go kill
and torture other people’s kids for the personal enrichment of his cronies
and left the poor people of New Orleans to die or become permanently displaced,
conveniently remaking that diverse Democratic city, at one of the centers of
the
U.S. petrochemical industry, into a white, Republican stronghold.
The future of our country is balancing on a precarious precipice. The Bush
cabal is moving full-speed ahead in their plans to establish the Global Empire
of Halliburton.
Almost daily exposés of their outrageous, illegal actions get swept under
the magic Fox News rug. Anyone not suffering from what David Swanson calls “smoking-gun
fatigue” is recognizing similarities to the rise of the Third Reich.
Unfortunately, there will be no country powerful enough to overthrow this regime
once it completes
its power grab (Unless you're counting on China to save us).
Our only chance to stop this nightmare is to take back Congress THIS
YEAR. That
means winning a majority in November AND making impeachment of Bush and Cheney
our
first priority. Anything less would be certifiably wacky.
Notes:
Do you want people in Congress with the spine to demand that Bush and Cheney are impeached
and that we get out of Iraq now? I'm ready to do it, and I need your help.

is.
