I am sad to report that, in his analysis piece on page A1 of the WaPo, Dan Balz was forced to name three of his sources. A sad, sad day for Pravda on the Potomac. A real stenographer could have written this article without naming a single source.
Let's document...
Paragraph 4 - "former administration officials and Republican strategists"
Paragraph 6 - "administration allies"
Paragraph 7 - "many people who know the administration best"
Paragraph 7 - "Bush" (Hallelujah, a name! Though I'm sure if Mr. Balz had actually asked, Bush would have requested anonymity.)
Paragraph 12 - "one Republican strategist close to the White House"
Paragraph 14 - "Former administration officials"
Paragraph 16 - "Administration allies"
Paragraph 17 - "One former administration official, who asked not to be identified in order to speak freely about his former colleagues" (I presume that the others must be anonymous purely to add flavor to the article since this is the only source identified as having asked for anonymity)
Paragraph 18 - "former Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer"
Paragraph 19 - "Kenneth Duberstein, White House chief of staff to president Ronald Reagan"
Paragraph 21 - "administration officials and allies"
Paragraph 22 - "one strategist who has worked closely with the administration"
On a brighter note, at least Balz didn't break down and quote any progressive or neutral sources. Happy day!
