Some time around the year 1300, the period known as the Renaissance began, sparking an explosion of art, sculpture, architecture and literature.
We all know that from grade school, but did you know we're just about to enter a new Renaissance?
I believe it to be true. I also think we should lift our eyes up from the muck for a few minutes and consider this coming Renaissance and all that it means to America.
First what will cause the spark: Universal health care. It's coming, whether Republicans like it or not. I don't know how long it will take, but it's coming. Corporations want it (it's typically their second biggest cost item). Average people want it. Pretty much the only people that don't want it are the super rich and those with a visceral fear of "government entitlements." But it's coming.
And when it comes, we're going to see a boom in creativity, independence and commerce like the world has never seen. Driven mainly by a massive movement of people away from their jobs with large companies, we'll see an explosion within months of the new health care law going into effect.
For example:
- Better jobs
Yep, those baby boomers who have been camped out in their offices are only there for one reason: so they can keep their benefits. They'll be out of there and you can finally get that director job you should have.
- Early retirement
So you say the only reason you're still working is to keep your health insurance? Well, you'll be able to retire now and make room for someone else. I personally can name dozens of people who would quit TODAY if they didn't have to keep their insurance.
- You can finally start that business
Been dreaming of starting your own restaurant? Dance studio? Independent newspaper? Internet company? Blog? When you don't have to worry about your insurance anymore, you'll finally have your chance. Plus you won't have to pay insurance for your staffers so you'll have a much lower overhead with your start-up. Finally independent restaurants and stores will begin to dominate the landscape once again as they'll finally be able to compete with the big corporations.
- Tap into your creativity
Always had a hankering for art or music? Maybe you'll finally have your chance to go part time and pursue your creative side.
- Get involved in politics
Many have said they're too busy to volunteer with their local Democratic party organization. Maybe once you're not tied to your job, you can get your boots on the ground and help keep your party in power.
- Better parenting
Many will finally be able to stay home with their children instead of heading off to work all day, dropping the kids off at the day care.
- Change jobs
Instead of sticking it out at a job you hate, you can finally take that chance and switch to a new company without worrying about the insurance situation.
- Better art
If you appreciate fine art, literature, cinema and drama, you're in luck. There will be an explosion of new artists, art studios, independent movies, more bands and more radio stations playing non-corporate rock.
In time, we'll see universal health completely transform this nation. From an influx of new restaurants in your neighborhood to great new music and art everywhere you turn, when we're finally free of the shackles of health care, we'll once again be a nation of free people.
UPDATE: Just to be clear, this has nothing to do with the bill in MA. Their concept, while marginally interesting, tries to force insurance on people. It becomes a responsibility instead of a right. They have it backwards in my opinion.
