After yet another hate-filled right-wing email passed along innocently from a friend, I blew my stack. I reached the end of my rope. I couldn't friggin take it anymore.
So with all due apologies to my friend, in a separate email, I fired back.
Question: did I go too far?
Read more on the flip.
To put my response in context,
here's a link to BOTH the content and debunk of an alleged email that's been going around the Internets claiming (inaccurately, as it turns out) to be hatespeech from Andy Rooney. A copy of this email hit my inbox, and the subject of the email was "Andy says it all..."
After trying to regain my composure and touching bases with a few friends, one of whom found the Snopes.com link for me, I did something that is very unusually snarky and probably childish of me.
I have to preface this with the fact that, for the past, oh, four years or so since the Iraq debacle had started, I'd sent out blanket e-mails of peace and liberalism to those on my lists. Over time, I learned to weed out the ones who either politely responded with, "Please don't send this stuff to me; I'm a Bush supporter." or, more commonly, "YOU SHITHEAD! You're STUCK ON STUPID! Everything you're saying is BULLSHIT to make me FEEL BAD about MY PRESIDENT! WAH!"
In response, I either made the mistake of trying to reason with them; or I'd simply delete and ignore their emails. But less and less so as time moves on...and especially not this time.
I went through EVERY SINGLE FORWARDING ADDRESS in the long, long thread of cretins who support this content who ultimately made their way to my inbox, and I responded with this (believe me, I did have to edit out the instances of "fucking" and "fucked-up" that I originally typed in the email):
OK, number one--I just found out, via a very respectable source, that Andy Rooney DID NOT say the things in the below forwarded e-mail. Don't take my word for it; take those of the sleuths at Snopes, hoax detectives extraordinaire:
http://www.snopes.com/...
Number two, all of y'all who forwarded this horrible, shameful crap to others, sharing in the glee of putting other people down, ought to be ashamed of yourselves.
This material, falsely attributed to Andy Rooney, no matter how much of an asshat he may be, is NOTHING to celebrate. And as I told someone privately who sent this to me, it will truly be our great country's undoing to keep believing in this utter FILTH.
What happened to treating your fellow Americans with a little plain old respect?
Whatever happened to respecting your neighbors' private lives and letting them live their own lives without the likes of YOU trying to shove your warped perversion of "Christianity" down theirs?
What happened to the TRULY CHRISTIAN virtues of giving, sharing, sacrificing for the good of others besides yourselves, offering kindness, and just plain TREATING other people like human beings instead of second-class dirt??
I'm one of those 86% mentioned [in the original email] who does, actually, believe in God; however, the God I believe in does NOT love intolerance; hatred; bigotry; phobia of other people gay, straight or otherwise; and worst of all, GREED. Of which the so-called "Christian" Republican party of which I'm taking an educated guess that you all support are hugely guilty.
Again, don't take my word for it; do some research and read for yourselves.
And no, sorry, the propagandic arm of the Republican party called Faux "News" doesn't count.
Jesus wept!! Especially after reading the hateful, vile crap you spew in His name below!!
Peace,
(my real name)
So again--too harsh?
