As if he were systematically trying to become the least popular president in American history, the President's address on immigration has turned his last remaining hardcore base against him. And against him
HARD.
From NRO, John O'Sullivan:
The speech was a tired and tiring repetition of all the president's previous sayings on immigration. Like them it was designed to suggest that he would be tough on border security and illegal immigration when in fact the small print of his proposals amounts to the "open door" that he celebrated in his peroration....
Rushie, RedState, Powerline, and more... their readers are not only against the President on this issue, they are downright angry. PoliPundint has gone so far as to close his blog to comments to stop the tide of anger and hate rushing forth from his readers.
This issue is like Harriet Meirs times a million. Possibly the best move that Democrats in D.C. could make would be to actually come out in support of some of the President's proposals (
some), wrapping them in a rational bill, and present that bill to the Republicans in Congress. They will be forced to either support the bill and anger their constituants or reject the bill and further alienate this Administration.
Or maybe the Democrats come out directly against his policy, forcing the right-wing base to either agree with Democrats or explain why they don't support either party.
Or maybe they sit back and watch the circus. But I've had enough sitting back. It's time for action. It's past time.
And they thought 29 was bad.
