Chicago Local Fox News coverage on the immigration protests downtown was pretty - what's the word - ignorant. I have to admit, I didn't watch the whole thing and I hadn't checked out what the other stations were reporting. Local Fox News is different than the cable station. The anchors aren't partisan hacks.
However, the big news on Sunday night about the immigration protests weren't the protests themselves, but how they will inconvenience everyone on their way to work. Given to us by the voice and insight of Nancy Pender, a representative of every suburban mom in the Chicago Metropolitan area. Her teeth, lipstick, botox implants and tweezed hair make the news emminating from her head soft and easy to swallow, or spittle depending on where you're from.
No examination on the importance of these protests, the heinous bill that attempts to criminalize these people and their families, the historical significance of this all. Nope, just how we're all going to be inconvenienced by selfish illegal brown people who have the tenacity to stand up to government bullies. If they want to be an American so bad, why can't they learn to lie down and take it like the rest of us legals?
It just dissappoints me that local news whittles down huge stories like this to insignificant tribulations. As if there's nothing to see here, move along. I'm not surprised by this, but think about the amount of people who don't read the paper, don't have cable T.V. and don't have the internet or don't use it to read national news. The only source of context out there for them is the local news station, dumbing down information as to not disturb consumer confidence or to hide the ugly truth that lurks in the shadows of this country.
Over 300,000 people protested against shameful partisan exploitation and the rest of the state might have thought it was Peurto Rican Independence Day.
