The Washington Post behaves exactly as any reader of Chomsky's Manufacturing Content would expect and offers us a completely fact-free editorial from a think tank, the Brookings Institution, telling us how it's so deadly important that net neutrality end. Oh, I weep for anybody who finds this muck persuasive.
Let's see, there's this Unit #233X-4 Robert Litan, and he's got a scenario! IMAGINE health care over the internet! IMAGINE that somehow you've got to have your vital signs transmitted online! IMAGINE that the latest post at Dkos sends thousands of people rushing to comment...interrupting your vital signs at THE PRECISE MOMENT you go into cardiac arrest, and you're trying to click the mouse for the remote doctor to authorize an adrenaline shot into your heart, but there's a funny video on Youtube...and you DIE! YOU'RE DEAD BECAUSE OF NET NEUTRALITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't let net neutrality kill you.
We need new cyber-highways if the brave new world of movies, fast Google searches, and telemedicine- to take a few examples- is to become at all viable.
Ten seconds of research:
At up to 30mbps (megabits per second), Fios is a quantum leap compared with Verizon's DSL (digital subscriber line) service, which runs at a maximum of 1.5mbps.
Fios can reach these speeds because it's based on fiber-optic lines that serve Internet access at a much higher clip than the traditional copper wires that support DSL.
Cox offers me premier internet service at speeds of 6-9mbps.
This is about corporate profit and, just as importantly, control. They cannot stand the internet as it is, what with just anybody able to say what they feel, and just anybody being able to read it.
