I have several bumper stickers on my and as a result am very aware of people seeing them and also very aware of others' stickers. I usually let out an angry chuckle (and sometimes a little curse) when getting cut off by a Jesus Fish bumper. But today I was driving down 77 S and traffic was rather steady. At one point, there were two other people with stickers near me. One was for
Strickland for Governor, the other had two old
Nader stickers (one read End War - Vote Peace - Nader). IN addition to my
Out Of Iraq Now, the Celebrate Diversity, and the
Human Rights Campaign sticker, it made quite a selection.
I have never really been a fan of people keeping campaign stickers on cars post election - win or lose. Afterward it kind of sets up this feel of branding, of unquestioning loyalty to the product. I would much rather see stickers reflecting the politics themselves than the candidate promoting them. So of course I really hate the W stickers. I hate the man, his politics, the idea of old campiagn stickers, and the fact that the Dems lost in 04.
But their number is dwindling. Of course there is the slow loss of people just tired of their old campaign stickers, but
this is much much more. People are fleeing this presidency as if it had leperosy (and not even Jesus will come to lay hands on it). History books will relegate these eight years to the shuddering death of the dark corners where Richard Nixon and Andrew Johnson now reside. Bush's policies will be listed next to the Alien and Sedition Act, the 18th Amendment, and the detainment of Japanese Americans during WWII.
Those still sporting the W logo are a radical minority in support of an unpopular and hostile unitary executive. Remember that when you see them. Let them know as much. It will be interesting - soon the faded Kerry stickers may outnumber those misguided Ws. Then we can take stock and see
who has really lost during these eight years.
