Today Alternet has a wonderful article on Dick Cheney and his mysterious Energy task force. What really happened with those meetings and why hasn't there been a formal investigation??
This article expresses urgency to get our Senators to act and investigate this task force.
Some highlights from the article include:
(Washington Post, May 2005) A White House document shows that executives from big oil companies met with Vice President Cheney's energy task force in 2001 -- something long suspected by environmentalists but denied as recently as last week by industry officials testifying before Congress ...The document, obtained this week by The Washington Post, shows that officials from Exxon Mobil Corp., Conoco (before its merger with Phillips), Shell Oil Co. and BP America Inc. met in the White House complex with the Cheney aides who were developing a national energy policy, parts of which became law and parts of which are still being debated.
Remember the GAO tried to file suit in 2002? Denied.
Sierra Club tried unsucessfully to obtain the records?
Result? Denied.
Even more interesting:
A standing executive order, strengthened by President Bush in 2003, requires all agencies and 'any other entity within the executive branch' to provide an annual accounting of their classification of documents. More than 80 agencies have collectively reported to the National Archives that they made 15.6 million decisions in 2004 to classify information, nearly double the number in 2001, but Cheney continues to insist he is exempt.
Where is Cheney's story? Let's investigate. Write or call your Congressman saying you want full accountability.
