Wisconsin U.S. Senate candidate Rae Vogeler spoke out today against Sen. Herb Kohl, D-WI, who is co-sponsoring a bill to lead us into a war with Iran. Kohl joined 20 other Democratic Party senators in supporting the Iran Freedom Support Act. This bill, put forth by Sen. Rick Santorum, R-PA, calls for tougher economic sanctions against the Iranian people and millions of dollars to support covert 'pro-democracy' groups working against the Iranian government. Vogeler warned of a repeat of the pattern of aggressive posturing and Democratic Party capitulation that led to the current disaster in Iraq.
With the help of pro-war Democrats like Herb Kohl, the Bush administration is seeking to force a "regime change" in Iran. Just as during the buildup to Iraq, it now claims that Teheran, by pursuing a nuclear capability, has become a global and regional threat that must be stopped. Administration officials are threatening the use of U.S. weapons of mass destruction, including economic sanctions and possible use of tactical nuclear weapons, if Iran goes ahead.
"If the history of the Iraq conflict tells us anything, it is that the results of regime change in Iran will be disastrous," Vogeler said. "The U.S. economy will slide deeper into debt and possibly recession. The Middle East will slide further into chaos. The U.S. will be further isolated internationally. There will be greater anger among 1.2 billion Muslims from the Middle East to the South Pacific. Oil prices will continue to skyrocket. There will be more pointless death and destruction."

This is not about advocating a Green candidate over a Democrat. This is about standing by the anti-war and peace movements, as progressives. This is about not buying into Bush's sick view of the world. We can no longer vote for pro-war candidates.
