I went home for Mother's Day this weekend to visit my mother, of course. Growing up, my mom was the only parent I had. Being a single mother isn't easy in a world where women make $.73 on average for each dollar a man makes in comparable position, so it's especially important, I think, to thank these courageous women, women like my mother.
With divorce rates on the rise, I'm sure there are plenty of kossacks who share my experience and feelings about their only parent. To my mind, there really ought to be an entirely seperate holiday in addition to the usual Mother's Day just for single moms -- after all, just one parent means twice the work! Maybe Father's Day could be made into Father and Single Mother's Day to better reflect the modern family and the challenges it faces.
So how about it, everyone? What did you do for Mother's Day this year?
My mom loves gardening, so she, my sister, and I went out and bought some shrubs and flowers for her garden. I'm no expert on gardening, so I was somewhat confused by the whole thing. Apparently, her soil and the time of year are such that she needs very special (and difficult to find!) plants, so we spent a lot more time than I would have thought doing that. Then we did a little planting and went to dinner at a nice vegetarian place.
