I was watching a History Channel special on the American Revolution last night, I think it was called "The Battle for New York." All about the beginnings of the war. It spent an entire segment on Thomas Paine and the importance of "Common Sense" in rallying the revolutionaries together in what seemed a huge task, throwing off King George's tyranny.
It rang a huge bell in my brain! This is exactly what we have been crying and railing for here at Daily Kos! We need a "Common Sense 2006" to unite us against Rove's bullshit marketing sound bytes! The historical parallels are screaming for it! Paine said of King George, "And as he hath shewn himself such an inveterate enemy to liberty, and discovered such a thirst for arbitrary power; is he, or is he not, a proper man to say to these colonies, "You shall make no laws but what I please." Radioman Vin Scelsa has been calling George W's tenure "The Imperial Presidency." What more do we need? How much more can we take? SO who among you will write it?
Will you produce 26 pages a la Thomas Paine? Will you write a one pager for our sound-byte loving, ADD riddled, short attention span, information at high speed culture? Will you simply forward this call to John Murtha or Jon Tester? Are YOU up for this challenge Markos? I believe you are.
Post your submissions in your diary - title it Common Sense 2006 by (insert whatever name here). Thomas Paine was a printer/publisher and he got "Common Sense" out there all by himself. It caught on like wildfire! So get your "Common Sense 2006" out there. Run off a couple hundred at Kinko's and start distributing them. Blog it. Email it to everyone in your address book. Markos, you already have a publisher - get it to them. Send it to your local, state and US reps. Just Do It (tm)! The winner will be the one that indeed gets around your state/our country.
