It is safe to say that when we look back on this third week in June, the week of June 18th, in our nation's history, it will be seen as a week where America lost a lot. How much? Let's count the ways...
We lost another state to the
abortion ban frenzy that's picking up steam in this country.
A news story showed that it appears we ended up losing our ports to Dubai anyway, underneath our noses.
We lost the privacy of our phone records without a search warrent to our government through brokers.
We lost any chance at accountability into the waste and fraud of military contracts that continue to fleece the American taxpayer.
We lost Japan as our Coalition of the Willing is rapidly dwindling.
We lost more than ten more US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, but most importantly, we lost two to "barbaric torture," which also showed by our lack of response to such behavior (and that of also the rest of the world) how much of our moral authority we have lost.
American workers and the poor lost by the Senate's vote to not raise the minimum wage, making us lose our confidence in them even more as this same Congress voted to give themselves a pay raise just a short time before the vote.
Americans are currently ripe for losing voting rights that were secured over forty years ago as our Congress has decided to hold off on voting for renewal of the 1965 Voting Rights Act
We lost, today, any chance until the election (if not longer) of seeing our troops begin their journey home as the GOP-controlled Congress rejected two amendments, offered by Democrats, to begin some form of withdrawal, with or without a timetable. We lost the hope that our Congress would not betray our troops by leaving them there without any set time to bring them home.
Immigration reform was lost this week as Congress pretty much killed the bill for this year.
Oh, and since all losses matter in this diary, the US lost to Ghana today and are out of the World Cup.
And if we don't wise up, we could also lose Net Neutrality.
I wonder - how much must be lost before Americans realize that there is nothing left to lose?
Add in the comments any other things I forgot to list that America lost this week.
