So Republicans want to make the war in Iraq one of the main campaign issues this year. Cut and run or stay the course is the false choice they want to give us.
Do you want to take Karl Rove on directly? Do you want to go right at what he perceives as their strength? Well here's how you can!
Wherever there's a future Karl Rove trying to organize an immigrant hunt Operation Yellow Elephant is there to encourage him to join the US Army. If there's a Grover Norquist wannabe holding an affirmative action bakesale on campus Operation Yellow Elephant is there to inform a local recruiter of this prime opportunity to meet his quota. When a young Brandon Yaniz and his friends in the Kane County Young Republicans put together a letters to the editor smear campaign against Democratic candidate John Laesch as he tries to unseat Denny Hastert Operation Yellow Elephant will be there to help them see their patriotic duty and enlist to gain the kind of valuable military experience that Denny himself and so many Republican leaders don't have. Denny had a knee injury that fortunately kept him out of the service during the Vietnam years but didn't keep him from becoming an excellent college wrestler. John Laesch? Well John wasn't such a fortunate son. He enlisted in the Navy in 1995, graduated at the top of his class from Great Lakes in 1996 and as an intelligence analyst in the Middle East received numerous citations and meritoriously rose 5 ranks within 3 short years. That's the kind of experience young and old Republicans alike just don't have these days and it shows. Just look at Iraq.
That's why Operation Yellow Elephant's work is so important. But Karl Olson and General J.C. Christian can't do it alone. They don't need your money - though I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you forwarded them a few bucks for all their good work. They need your emails, phonecalls, and letters to the editor to encourage these young and not so young (up to 42 years of age now) politically active Republicans to join the US Army and take the place of a soldier who is on his third tour in Iraq riding in an underarmored Humvee in 115 degree heat wondering if today is the day an IED blows him to kingdom come. We need to alleviate the recruiting crunch and not by scrapping the intellectual bottom of the barrel or giving kids who run afoul of the law the choice of jail or basic training like we're doing these days. That doesn't make for a very professional army and while the average budding Jack Abramoff or Don Segretti is probably more morally challenged than your average kid who can't read the contract he's signing or is caught holding up a 7-11 they're usually a little smarter too. America needs young Republican political operatives in uniform in Iraq as soon as possible. Not in ROTC training like Supreme Court Justice Sam Alito back in the early 70s, not at West Point or Annapolis but as GIs who can be deployed within a year to Ramadi and Baghdad.
These young people who aspire to be the next ruling elite of the ruling party need to see what a botched occupation and sectarian war looks like firsthand. And maybe, just maybe, they will learn some serious lessons about the use of force and realize the bankruptcy of seeing war as a useful tool for dividing our nation for domestic political purposes.
Yes, that's why Operation Yellow Elephant needs you. I don't what to go all Sally Struthers on you but won't you please help?
