I think the Iraqis need to be given the opportunity to vote in a referendum, just like it is done in California, to see whether they want US combat troops in their country. This could decide the issue, without our having Senators coming out in favor of unilateral withdrawal. Also, it would be hard for GWB to oppose this, since he has already told us that Iraq is a democracy and that their votes need to be respected. I think pushing for such a referendum would be not only good for the Iraqis, but would obviously be a good position for Democrats. Then the Senators & Reps wouldn't need to be in favor of unilateral leaving, they could be in favor of having the democratic voters of Iraq vote on this up or down. I would even be in favor of staying if there was a real vote telling us that the Iraqis wanted that (Bush doesn't get to count the votes). I think this idea could be a great way for our DEM congresspeople to deal with this issue in this most important election year.
The Proposition could read someting like this:
"Should all United States combat forces leave Iraqi soil within the next 90 days".
Pretty simple, but leaving room for Special Forces consultants to remain for training.
