The Democrats have picked a candidate for the 3rd Congressional District. This seat has been held by Peter King (R)since 1992. My first memory of Peter King is as a man who has been pushing for an English only Federal Policy for years. He is the Chairman of the Committe on Homeland Security and has voted against a lot of that funding! We all know how well he has supported getting the First Responders in getting better communication equipment that they need.
He is also pretty nasty towards any constituents that disagree with him.
Dave Mejias is the first Latino to serve in the Nassau County Legislature. His Mom immigrated here from Equador and his Dad is from Cuba. They met in an English class in Hempstead.
Dave started his own business at the age of 26 and runs his own law practice.
Dave was Chairman of the transition team when the Democrats and Tom Suozzi retook Nassau County from the Nassau County Republican machine. Cleaning up the disaster from decades of fraud, waste and cronyism was a huge job.
Dave is currently the Chair of the Nassau County Legislature Economic Development Committee. Before taking office in the Legislature in 2003, he was on the board of the Industrial Development Agency.
Dave sponsored legislation this Spring to establish a registry for Domestic Partners in order to help couples prove the status of their relationship in order to apply for domestic partner benefits from companies tht offer them.
He has worked on some local environmental issues, legal protection for domestic workers, strengthening Megan's law to prohibit sexual offenders from living near schools or parks.
Dave is well aware of how the Federal tax situation plays out at the local level. Nassau County's property taxes are out of control as school districts struggle to pay expenses. Young people are leavng Long Island because they simply cannot afford to live here.
