If the poorest among us cannot get a raise in the Federal Minimum Wage, why should the Congress get another increase in pay?
As we all watched last week, the Fristies in the Senate, using the usual excuses promoted by big business, blocked the increase in the minimum wage to $7.25 per hour over 3 years... which would be the first increase in a decade. Then they went on to propose an increase in congressional pay of $31,000.00 a year!
It looks like the Democrats may show the backbone we've been calling for over these two related issues.
"We're going to do anything it takes to stop the congressional pay raise this year, and we're not going to settle for this year alone," said Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada. "They can play all the games the want. They can deal with gay marriage, estate tax, flag burning, all these issues and avoid issues like the prices of gasoline, sending your kid to college. But we're going to do everything to stop the congressional pay raise."
And he claims to have the votes to do it. And ... and this is the best part ... he says we'll hold fast this year and next year and as long as it takes.
Go Harry! You've got us all behind you!
