this post of atrios on the insane cult leader and influential republican Reverend Moon (owner of the Washington Times) got me thinking about secession (one of atrios' links talks about Washington Times editor Robert Stacy McCain who is an amazingly racist advocate of Southern secession. If the article linked is to be believed he thinks that slavery is fine, for example, if done in accordance with the scripture. Compared to this guy, Moon may be the reasonable one).
So, what do you think would really happen if the South were to secede?
One thing I can tell you, if it happened it would unite northern liberals and conservatives on the need for strong military spending.
I guess I'm not wondering if this was unilaterally attempted (like last time), but if somehow the congress etc. all agreed a secession should happen and enacted it more or less legally.

Maybe another related atrios post is the one arguing that most Federal revenue goes to "red states"... which are accepting the government handout from the blue... hmmm.

Here is a poll, but of course the options cannot really be sufficient in this sort of hypothetical, but it covers the basis of my question.

PS: NO OFFENSE to Southern Liberals. You are awesome. Actually, I'm most interested of all in what you might think on this hypothetical.
