Courageous Democrat, Proven Leader

Not only is Mr. Hass a visiting scholar at Georgetown University, he is a member of the Committee on the Present Danger. And surprise, so is Joe Lieberman.

What's that, you ask? Here are some thoughts picked up by the Connecticut Post and given to us Nutmeggers on Sunday:
The antiwar insurgency behind Ned Lamont's challenge to Joe Lieberman makes no sense on policy or political grounds and, if successful, would haunt the Democratic Party for years to come.
To be sure, Lieberman's support for the war has angered Democrats. But with anger comes respect, for in the face of controversy Lieberman has not wilted. In Lieberman, what you see is what you get. That's why even such anti-war Democrats as California's Barbara Boxer, New York's Chuck Schumer and Nevada's Harry Reid, the party's Senate leader, back Lieberman.
But let's be clear: Lieberman harshly criticized how President Bush took us to war and how he prosecuted it. He slammed Bush over his go-it-alone foreign policy, his refusal to plan for post-war Iraq and his failure to prevent the Abu Ghraib prison abuse. Lieberman also called for rolling back Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy to provide funds to better support the troops.
So just what is the Committee on the Present Danger? Well, some names on their list of members include The Hon. Newt Gingrich, Steve Forbes, R. James Woolsey, Edwin Meese, and Norman Podhoretz.
James Woolsey, who has this to say:
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Former CIA Director James Woolsey said Wednesday the United States is engaged in World War IV, and that it could continue for years.

Norman Podhoretz, who wrote:
"World War IV: How It Started, What It Means, and Why We Have to Win"

Newt Gingrich also agrees:
Gingrich says it's World War III
Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president.

Do you see a theme? The Committee on the Present Danger, whose mission statement says they will "raise awareness to the threat to American safety; communicate the risk inherent in appeasing totalitarianism; and build support for an assertive policy to promote the security of the United States and its allies and friends."
In other words, the CPD hopes to raise the level of fear among Americans by declaring that the United States is immersed in another World War, but has not yet committed adequate resources to the global battle. The current CPD is not a policy institute or a think tank, but it functions as a front group that writes articles, statements, reports, holds conferences as it attempts to gain support for increased military spending and a more aggressive global war against Islamic militants, particularly in the Middle East.
I listened to Joe on a radio interview at WPKN Bridgeport, and for some reason he refused to discount the possibility that the U.S. is involved in another World War. Scary, no?
And this, fellow Democrats, is the person who is advocating to be our Senator.
