If you have been following Michael Schiavo's
TerriPAC, it is no surprise that he is out there trying to make a real difference in November. You also may know that in addition to supporting a bunch of candidates, he's actually headlining fundraising events for them.
As reported in TheRawStory, his hitting the campaign trail is not going unnoticed:
Michael Schiavo, the husband of the late Terri Schiavo who became the center of a fractious national debate over medical ethics and the right to life last year, is assisting the political campaigns of Democratic candidates for Congress and Governor...
Schiavo, who made the decision to remove the feeding tube of his wife Terri who was in a persistent vegitative state for 15 years after experiencing major heart failure at the age of 26, went on to found TerriPAC, an organization which according to its website works to "raise and spend funds to educate voters on where their elected officials stood when they had a choice between individual freedom and personal privacy and overreaching government action."
Needless to say, we know he's doing something right. GOP chairman Bob Martinez was apparently upset (from the Rocky Mountain News):
The chairman of Colorado's Republican Party chastised Democratic congressional candidate Peggy Lamm on Wednesday for "shamefully" inviting Michael Shiavo to raise money tonight for her campaign.
Lamm fired back immediately, saying it was the Republican Party's fault for dragging the Schiavo family into the national debate over the right to live vs. the right to die with dignity.
Martinez called on Lamm to cancel tonight's event, which he said showed the hypocrisy of Democrats who blamed Republicans last year of using the Schiavo tragedy for their own political gain.
"It's disgusting that Peggy Lamm would seek to raise money off of the Schiavo family's personal tragedy," Martinez said in a statement.
Lamm reiterated that she was "proud" to have Micheal's support.
Damn right!
Michael's an incredible person to take all this on. After all he's been through. The fact is that all the candidates TerriPAC supports are terrific. They all would have voted the right way -- to keep government out of our private health decisions. They all (except Castor) are facing tough GOP elections. They can all use our support.
