George W. Bush and his fellow wingnuts claim that they are concerned about the hundreds of thousands of blastocysts that need to be protected from being used for stem cell research. Well, I have the perfect solution. I call it the Embryo Adoption Program (EAO).
You see, since the President's veto, these blastocysts are now protected from being used for research into stem cells. But almost all of them will be disposed of eventually, since they cannot last forever, even in their current frozen state.
So the solution is simple. The president can even start the ball rolling. Each of the Bush daughters, Jenna and Barbara is a young, reasonably healthy (except maybe for their livers) woman, and both are obviously of childbearing age. Each of them can be implanted with one of these blastocysts. Each will carry the baby to term, give birth, and raise the baby as her own.
Then, "Dr." James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and all the other wingnut right-to-lifers can encourage all of their female followers of childbearing age to have one of these blastocysts implanted. With the millions of followers they all claim, it shouldn't be hard to find enough of them to carry the million or so babies to term. Of course, they will have to raise them as their own children--no giving them up for adoption.
And we won't have to bother asking the couples that created these blastocysts for permission to use them--after all, they abandoned these potential human lives once they were done with their IVF treatment. So they have no say in what is done with them.
Of course, only about 1 in 5 of these blastocysts actually implants, but just think: That's 200,000 or more new babies who, in 18 years, will be of voting age, and who will have been raised and indoctrinated in right-wing households. That's a huge new voting bloc, all of them just as frothing-at-the-mouth crazy as the current crop of wingnuts. And they could finally get creationism back in the classroom where it belongs, and get rid of this evil called science once and for all.
And the EAO program may even inspire liberal groups to encourage their members to do the same, since they'll be frightened of facing such a large bloc of opponents in 18 years.
If the EAO program is enacted now, it shouldn't take more than a year to safely remove every blastocyst currently in storage in IVF clinic freezers around the country and implant them in willing wombs, thus preventing these evil scientists from getting their hands on them and finding cures for diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, et al.
It seems like the perfect solution to me.
