Watching the news last night, my heart sank ever deeper, but I was also very creeped out. Here was our lovely Condi, smiling her way through meetings with Lebanon's president, smiling her way to the microphones, sweetly commenting on the U. S. position, which amounts to "who cares who's dying." I thought abou this creepy image all night.
One thing is so clear to me--Bush and his administration officals are creepy in the way they distance themselves from any awarness of human misery. Bush embraces "the culture of life" with protection of blastocysts, but doesn't shed a tear for dead children in the Middle East! He actually ordered that killing in Iraq, and he stands by and encourages it in Israel and in Lebanon. Well, that's partly right--lives in Israel are more valuable than lives in Lebanon--Bush and Condi have made that very clear. It's about "the war on terra," that misguided, phoney, deadly policy that has managed to keep this country silent. Condi SMILES!!! She sits in at a nice shiney, big, long table and shakes hands with the president of Lebanon, and she looks at the camera and SMILES!! And just a few miles away, children are burned and dying! I cannot get over that smile. That smile is a metaphor for Bush's entire Middle East policy--which is, what? It changes sometimes, doesn't it? I have this fantasy--I want Bush, Cheney, Rice, and Rumsfeld (and so many others) to be airlifted onto the killing fields of Iraq, or any other place in the region that is experiencing death and destruction, and I want them to have no way out. To be forced to actually hear, smell, taste, and see the death of the innocents. They each would cave pretty fast. But do you think Condi would smile as she faints dead away? This is so diabolical, this administration. War criminals who should be tried and hanged.
