That's what a lot of people are saying in response to TrueMajority's latest online project, aimed at ending tax breaks for oil companies: "Sure let's get our money back from the thieving S.O.B.'s, but I'm actually glad gas is expensive." They're right, of course, and I'll go even further: God bless running out of oil.
It could be a beautiful historic irony, right? We've been racing our 15-mpg SUV's toward the cliff of climate catastrophe, arguing over whether to put a foot on the brake, when suddenly the engine coughs and sputters, and we run out of gas.
As my wife points out, our 100-year-old oil economy has a lot of momentum at pumping greenhouse gases into the sky, so we still might coast over the tipping point of global disaster. But maybe not. And at least we aren't still accelerating.
