Fort Bend Now breaks the story:
State and local Republican Party officials will hold a "gathering" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Pearland to discuss throwing support behind a single GOP write-in candidate for Congressional District 22.
Party sources said the event is not an official meeting of the party - yet it won't be open to the public or the press. Precinct chairs within CD-22, GOP chairmen and their staffs from Fort Bend, Harris, Galveston and Brazoria counties will be invited.
Also, Texas Republican Party Executive Committee members within CD-22, possibly other state GOP officials and Republican elected officials from the four counties within CD-22 may attend.
It's a "gathering" because the courts have ruled that they can't have an official meeting to pick a candidate. Yet, they're going to the smoke filled room to annoint their pick anyway. (Okay, it's at a Baptist church, so there may be no smoking allowed...)
What's next? Join me after the jump.
Conventional wisdom says that Sugar Land mayor David Wallace will not be the choice of the party big-wigs. Dimwit Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs (try entering that on an E-Slate!) now says she'll run only if asked; ditto for Harris County Tax Assessor Paul Bettencourt. So we should have at least two GOoooooPers killing each other in November.
All this because the fine ethical Christian that is Tom Delay wanted to raise some more campaign funds before dropping out of the race and turning that campaign money into legal defense money.

Texas GOP, you just got played by one of your own. Sucks to be you.
Meanwhile, this is no time to rest on our laurels. Get involved. There's blockwalking on Saturday mornings, there's phone banking, and even if you don't live in TX-22 you can Adopt A Sign!
