I was thinking today while reading
Wingnut whackjob "news" website Agape Press that I wonder how many of us here read and stay informed about what the far, far right is up to.
To be fair, I think these guys are on the way out. But it never hurts to stay informed.
I read them (as much as it pains me to give them the site hits) regularly, both for laughs and for the sake of understanding their memes so I can counter them.
I encourage you to do the same, to the extent that Mylanta and other over-the-counter medications can keep you from illness.
Having said that, here's my directory....
The American Family Association, headed by wingnut extraordinaire Donald Wildmon, is usually about organizing boycotts against sponsors of "offensive" network programming and companies that sponsor anything the right wing doesn't like. I often find their content hilarious. Case in point:
A Los Angeles pastor and his wife say they are preparing to sue a public charter school for showing an obscene, sexually explicit, R-rated movie in their daughter's ninth-grade English class last February.
According to Pastor Brian Lewis and his wife Tara, Animo Venice Charter Public High School, a school serving the city of Venice, California, and the Los Angeles Westside, violated their parental rights when school officials failed to inform the parents that the school would be showing his daughter Alexis and fellow students the R-rated movie, Donnie Darko.
Focus on the Family, home of our beloved Dr. James Dobson, is more about teaching people how gays don't exist and men have dominance over women. Not to mention some pretty wild child-rearing advice. Today's sampling:
The National Embryo Adoption Awareness Campaign is in full swing around the country, with agencies educating couples who want to adopt about a relatively new technology called "snowflake" adoption.
To date, 113 snowflake babies have been born. Ron Stoddart, director of Nightlight Christian Adoptions, told a recent gathering of snowflake families in Denver that there are 400,000 frozen embryos at in-vitro fertilization clinics who could be adopted.
Concerned Women for America, home of the delightful Phyllis Schafly (writing that made me throw up in my mouth a little). These people are not only not living in this century, I'm not even sure they're from this planet. An example:
Concerned Women for America (CWA) calls for the withdrawal of the nomination of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach, citing his pandering to political activists and a drug company. Von Eschenbach is pushing through a drug approval that is unprecedented in FDA's history - to make a high-dose of a drug (Plan B, a morning-after pill) available without a prescription when a low-dose of the same drug (birth control pills) requires medical oversight to protect women from serious health complications.
"The FDA would be overstepping its precedent and authority to make Plan B available nonprescription," stated Wendy Wright, CWA's President. "It defies common sense to allow easy access to a high-dose drug, based on the age of the person who buys it, when a low dose for anyone requires medical oversight. Under von Eschenbach's proposal, an 18-year-old could buy the drug and give it to an adolescent, even though the drug owner, Barr, has not adequately tested it to ensure it can be safely used by adolescents.
Pat Robertson. Now let's be accurate: this guy is so whacko that even the MSM covers his stupid declarations. But it's fun to tool around the site, especially with all of Pat's fabulous weight loss information. Take this:
There is one thing I know about the Lord and that is He never asks me to do anything without providing what I need to do it. So I'm feeling excited about a weight-loss adventure with Him in control.
With new hope, I headed off to the YMCA on Monday to do my workout. On my way there, I was stopped by a friend who asked if she could go to church with me that evening. Our church has a Monday night prayer meeting. I don't usually attend, but I had a feeling that this was something the Lord was leading me to do. So instead of working out at the YMCA, I went home, put on some worship music, and jumped on the treadmill.
Ok, I could go on forever. So now I'll reveal my source:
I'm a card carrying member of PFAW (People for the American Way). Their website has links to, descriptions of, and information about virtually every wingnut organization known to man.
Give 'em some love. This commercial has been brought to you by the world-famous Auntie. We now return you to your regularly scheduled Kos-programming.
