In today's
Hartford Courant, It is made pretty clear that President Bush, like most Connecticut Republicans, would like to see Joe Lieberman win back his Senate seat in November. While he doesn't outright endorse Joe, he does outright refuse to endorse his own party's nominee, Alan Schlesinger. Obviously he wouldn't want Ned Lamont to take the seat, so that leaves just one guy...
In the latest
Quinnipiac poll:
Lieberman leads 75 - 13 - 10 percent among likely Republican voters, and 58 - 36 - 3 percent among likely independent voters, while likely Democratic voters back Lamont 63 - 35 percent.
So it's pretty obvious that Bush is merely representing the views of his base with his non-endorsement endorsement. Joe can't have it both ways. How can he keep pushing the "devoted Democrat" meme when he needs the support of registered independents and Republicans far moreso to win the election? Why should these people vote for him if he's so devoted to the Democrats? Yet why would any Democrats (or most independents as Bush's approval rating here around 29%) is vote for Bush's pet? So one would think he's going to have to step back from this tactic and will show once again his true colors: he's a devoted Joe Lieberman party member and a craven politician.
