Hey all, remember
this diary of mine on the CT-4 race? As with all the CT races (save governor) support for the war in Iraq is enough to crush otherwise very moderate Republicans into the race of their lives? The interesting thing? Go below the fold to learn (as if you can't tell from the title) what Chris Shays is doing to try and stay alive.
Here is the story, decently written, from CNN.
Yes, that's right folks. From the lead:
Shays, long a supporter of the war and previously an opponent of withdrawal timetables, said he hopes to offer a specific time frame after he holds congressional hearings on Iraq next month. Few other congressional Republicans have supported setting a timeline.
"Our troops cannot be there indefinitely," Shays said Thursday from London during a telephone conference call with reporters after his 14th visit to Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
Farrell makes the good point that, "I don't think Chris needed to go to Iraq 14 times to know it's a mess," and Shays is probably the weakest of the 3 seats (Simmons the next, with Johnson easily the toughest of the incumbant Reps), but could this move the race back? I don't think the
next round of Cook Political Report and it's ilk will show the effect of this (as we have to wait for the actual hearings for most people to pick up on this) but could introducing/supporting such a bill save Shays his seat?
Same poll from my earlier CT-4 article to see how our voting changes because of this.
