OK, I'm excited, but I'll excercise the utmost self-restraint and refrain from using the word "BREAKING" in my title line.
But, according to a new poll out, conducted by Zogby for the Wall Street Journal between Aug. 15-21, Jim Webb is leading George Allen by 1.3 percent.
In the race for Virginia's Senate seat, George Allen, the state's Republican senator and former governor, had been polling strongly against James Webb, former Secretary of the Navy in the Reagan administration, with Allen leading by 11 percentage points in the mid-July survey. But in the most recent poll, he trails by about 1 percentage point, a sharp swing John Zogby attributes to a "collossal political crackup."
Of course, a good deal of this is George Allen's recent self-inflicted wounds, with which
we are all familiar. But we need to help
get Jim Webb's message out to the voters if we're going to keep the momentum going.
This is big news, and will certainly be explosive once the broader MSM picks up on it -- we need to make sure we don't get complacent, though. If we give it the final push over the next couple of months, we can win this.
Update: Was away from my computer for a while, and am rather shocked to find this at the top of the recommended diary list. Apparently someone else had posted in the 20 minutes or so I spent fishing around for the links to put in this -- so apologies to them (though it appears that's on the rec list as well).
Regarding Zogby's methodology, I didn't get into a discussion of that since I was trying to post it quickly, but yes, it's not as solid as some other polling. Having said that, it's not 'freep'-able like online polls -- it's adjusted for demographics. Anyway, despite its limitations, I do think this is big news -- since whatever flaws it has, the trendline is clear, and it's consistent with recent polls showing upward momentum from SUSA and Rasmussen. (If Rasmussen has any bias, it generally works in favor of Republicans.)
Of course, it's also important due to the fact that the MSM is going to be all over this tomorrow. There is no question at this point that the Virginia Senate race is on the A List.
Another "bad headline day" for George Felix Allen.
Couldn't happen to a nicer guy![/snark]
